一方、高齢者がルンバを購入する主な理由は、私にとっては意外でした。「掃除機のコンセントを挿さなくてもいい」ということだそうです。部屋の電源コンセントは、たいてい床に近いところに付いています。「いったんしゃがんでコンセントを挿し、立ち上がる」という動作は、高齢者にとってはとても負担が大きいとのこと。しかも、違う部屋を掃除するときには、コンセントを挿し替えなければなりません。

　ルンバであれば、掃除が終われば自動的に充電スタンドに戻ってきます。また、普通の掃除機はクローゼットに片付けることが多いので、出したりしまったりが大変ですが、ルンバは出しっぱなしが前提なので、そうした手間もかかりません。要するに30～40歳代は「時間の節約」、高齢者は「労力の低減」が購入動機になっているのです。
